Machining Cheat Sheet

Piece of wood with surfboard building suggestions written on it

High school would have been WAY easier if we could have done this there, too.

Sammy's Kevlar Puerto Beast

Sammy's Kevlar Puerto Beast

FCD surfboard for surfing Puerto Esondito

Sammy made this board from scratch, using one of our raw blanks which is an undertaking in itself. The entire board is glassed with Kevlar using epoxy which means you can't hit it with the sander - if you do it's ruined. You pretty much only get one chance to nail it but luckily Sammy is a ninja. He made the fins himself, too. If you are in Puerto  and see this board this summer say hi to Sammy, he'll be stoked!

Where the magic happens

Where the magic happens

Foam surfboard blanks stacked up

Where every FCD boards starts it's life, the foam shop, late afternoon. Judging by the work being done there must have been a swell, just the way it oughta be.

It's alive!

It's alive!

Glassing decks in the FCD glassing room

The glass shop post paint job. Some of you may remember the pink walls from previous shots, that was actually a color used in insane asylums to keep patients calm. I have no idea why anyone thought that would be necessary. Stru and Robin bring a few freshies to life, sick style with the silver suit Stru!

More tools of the trade

More tools of the trade

Fletcher in the shaping bay hanging up a tool

What Fletch is hanging up measures to check if there's any twist in the blank before it gets glassed. There are 2 more in the glass shop that measure the same thing, and everyday each curing rack in the oven is checked to make sure it's level. Something tells me you won't find that in the Cobra factory....

Foam Dust

Foam Dust

Fletcher in the shaping bay holding a level with foam dust in the air

Parmenter always said, "what goes into your lungs doesn't come out, wear your mask". Hard to believe people used to shape, glass, and sand with a Marlboro for lung protection.

Tools of the trade

surfboard durability testing tools

Calipers, rulers, saw, and a sharpie are just some of the tools used in the machining room. Don't let this fool you though, what isn't shown is the attention to detail required to keep from destroying blanks and sending the cutter into the clamp heads.
