2009 NSSA Nationals - Open Women's Champ

Lakey Peterson holding first place trophies at the 2009 NSSA Nationals

From the FCD inbox - a Nationals report from Lakey Peterson:

Hey guys! I just finished NSSA Nationals at Salt Creek and Lower Trestles. The waves at Salt Creek for the first part of the contest were really bad but the thing that kept me going was that if I made it through a couple of rounds there I knew I could surf Lower Trestles with only four people out!

Gerry Lopez shaping a surfboard at Sacred Craft event

Gerry at Sacred Craft, he gave a shaping demo in thr Primo Beer booth. When he was doing this the tradeshow seemed empty. I think it was because everyone was crowded around the glass box watching and listening!

Sammy's Kevlar Puerto Beast

Sammy's Kevlar Puerto Beast

FCD surfboard for surfing Puerto Esondito

Sammy made this board from scratch, using one of our raw blanks which is an undertaking in itself. The entire board is glassed with Kevlar using epoxy which means you can't hit it with the sander - if you do it's ruined. You pretty much only get one chance to nail it but luckily Sammy is a ninja. He made the fins himself, too. If you are in Puerto  and see this board this summer say hi to Sammy, he'll be stoked!

WSA Prime - Girls 16 and Under Champion

WSA Prime - Girls 16 and Under Champion

Lakey Peterson holding her championship belt

FCD team rider Lakey Peterson recently took home the belt for the girls 16 and under division at Oceanside.

"Today I competed in the end of the year WSA Prime Championships in Oceanside. WSA Prime is an invitation only event that brings together the best junior surfers from around the US that have been competing for this championship all year long. It is also the launching point to become a member of Team USA that travels to the ISA world games.

The contest was very cool; it was the first time that juniors have ever surfed in man-on-man heat in this big of a venue. Man-on-man is unique in that it really allows surfers to show their talent without all the jocking that goes on in a six man heat. I won the girls 16 and under, beating out Lani Dougherty of Hawaii who is currently ranked #10 in the world. Next up I surfed against my nemesis, #2 in the world and last years National Champ, Courtney Conlogue. She beat me by .05 points in a nail biter, buzzer beater heat. She scored a 8.32 to beat out my 8.15.

All in all it was a great contests and super practice for the NSSA Championships coming up this month at Lowers Trestles"

Rell Sunn Educational Fund Event

Rell Sunn Educational Fund Event

Rell Sunn Educational Fund Event Flyer

Information about a great event, in honor of a beloved member of the Patagonia family.

Please join us this March 28, 2009 for another special screening of the multi-award winning documentary film on the life of Rell Kapolioka'ehukai Sunn, the Queen of Makaha. You'll laugh, cry and be inspired by her amazing journey. Often referred to as the "Queen of Makaha," Rell was the quintessential water-woman, excelling at all watersports, including surfing, bodysurfing, spearfishing, and open-water outrigger canoeing. In the early 70's, Rell was instrumental in establishing the Women's Professional Surfing Association and founding the women's pro surfing tour in which she twice finished third in the year end rankings. Despite all of her accomplishments, Rell Sunn remained a completely humble and unselfish person, and might easily have been called the "Queen of Aloha" for the spirit she carried with her, and the enthusiasm she devoted to every aspect of her life.
